Week 1 - Trans Theoretical Model Flashcards
what are the 5 stages of the trans theoretical model?
Pre-contemplation Contemplation Preparation Action Maintenance
true or false:
you have to change client’s behavior first in order to show them they should change their thinking
false: you have to change their mode of thinking first, THEN you can help them change their behavior
- intending to change in the next few months
- have some awareness of benefits to change
- may be ambivalent and have low self confidence
contemplation
- not intending to change
- awareness may be incomplete
- may be demoralized and not thinking about their habits
- pros are vastly outweighed by cons
pre contemplation
- has committed to new behavior and is consistently engaging in it
- risk for relapse is high
action
- the individual has decided to take action and is actively planning to do so in the immediate future
- knows the motivating factors for PA; ambivalence has been addressed
preparation
- behavior is now adopted: been engaging in it for the past few months
- high confidence
- learned strategies to deal with lapses
- often don’t get as much support
maintenance
what is motivational interviewing?
- a directive, client- centered counselling style for eliciting behavior change by helping clients explore and resolve ambivalence
- founded on premise that lasting change is more likely when clients discover their own reasons for change
- recognizes that clients start at different levels of readiness to change
What are ways to provide client-centered approach?
• Provide affirmation and/or reassurance about client’s
current practices,
• Offer guidance (with permission) to help client set new
goals and/or provide support for relapse planning.
• Consider the client’s motivational needs and stage of
readiness to initiate and sustain a program of regular
physical activity.
• Provide space for client to identify their own barriers &
propose own solutions.
define ambivalence
• Exists when we simultaneously have positive and negative feelings (in this case toward a behavior)
What is the trans theoretical model?
people change habitual behaviours such as PA slowly,
passing through a series of specific stages, each
characterized by a particular pattern of psychosocial
and behavioural changes.
preparation
• the individual has decided to take action and is
actively planning to do so in the immediate future.
• knows the motivating factors for PA; ambivalence has
been addressed
define contemplation
• intending to change in next few months • have some awareness for benefits of change • may be ambivalent and have low self-confidence
define pre contemplation
• not intending to change • awareness may be incomplete • may be demoralized and not thinking about their habits • ‘pros’ for PA are vastly outweighed by ‘cons’
