Week 1: Subnetting Flashcards
What do IP Addresses Identify?
The Network and the Host
What was Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) developed for?
Slowing the exhaustion of IP Addresses
What does CIDR allow the use of?
Allows for the use of prefixes to designate the number of Network Bits in the Subnet Mask. The prefix can be longer than the default subnet mask (subnetting) or it can be shorter than the default subnet mask (supernetting)
What is Subnetting?
Dividing major network IP blocks into smaller blocks
What characterizes a Broadcast Address?
When the entire host portion of an IP address is all binary ones (e.g. 190.55.255.255 & 199.192.65.63)
What does a Subnet Address Identify?
The network via the first, or first few, octets
A TCP/IP Host with a non-zero identifier
What are the 2 Broadcast Types?
Flooded Broadcasts
Directed Broadcasts
What are Flooded Broadcasts for?
Broadcasting for any Subnet
What are Directed Broadcasts for?
Routers forwarding directed Broadcasts
What are the reasons for subnetting?
To match the physical layout of the organization
To match the administrative structure of the organization
Optimized network performance
Simplified management
To plan for future growth
To reduce network traffic
Why can you not have a subnet of 2 IP addresses?
Because the first and last IP addresses are reserved.
What is the first IP in a subnet reserved for?
Network ID
What is the last IP in a subnet reserved for?
Broadcast
