A

Aerosol generating procedures - activity that can result to the release of small airborne particles (aerosols) or droplets

Examples:
- Induction of sputum
- Bronchoscopy
- Some dental procedures (e.g. high-speed drilling)
- Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) e.g. BiPAP or CPAP

Outline the steps to take in response to a needlestick injury

A
  • Wash exposed area liberally with soap and water or rinse the eyes thoroughly
  • Encourage free bleeding of wounds but without sucking
  • Cover any wounds with waterproof dressing
  • Seek advice from Occupational Health

Outline some good sharps practice steps

A
  • Always take sharps bin to place and dispose of sharps at point of use
  • Never resheath needles by hand
  • Request assistance if difficult patient that may need restraining
  • Always dispose of sharps individually and don’t give role to anyone else
  • Never remove needles from insulin pens
  • Sharps bin should be left in a partial closed position when not in use
  • Never overfill a sharps bin
  • Discard needle and syringe as one unit (don’t try and detach)

A

Define ‘identifiable’ data and understand the precautions that are needed to protect it

A

Identifiable information is anything that contains the means to identify a person, e.g. name, address, postcode, date of birth, NHS number

Precautions:
- Don’t access unless required
- Don’t leave computer screens unlocked / paper sheets in view
- Don’t share information in public space
- Don’t remove patient information from workplace unless required for visits, in which case it should be carefully looked after
