Week 1: Pelvis Flashcards
Name the joints of the pelvis
sacroiliac joint, pubic symphysis and sacrococcygeal joint
Classify the sacroiliac joint
synovial (anterior) and fibrous (posterior)
Classify the sacrococcygeal joint
manay different classifications; symphysis, synovial and fused
What movements occur at the SIJ?
nutation (nodding) and counter-nutation on a transverse axis
Name the ligaments of the SIJ
iliolumbar ligament, posterior sacroiliac ligament, sacrotuberous ligament, anterior sacroiliac ligament, sacrospinous ligament
What is form closure?
a theoretical stable joint due to close fitting srticular surfaces
Why is form closure not practical?
SIJ motions allow gat, absorb shock and shear forces, and allow special adaptations for pregnancy and childbirth
What is force closure?
extra forces required to stabilise the joint
What muscles attach to the ubic syphysis?
external oblique, rectus abdominus, adductor longus
Where are compression forces absorbed in the pelvic girdle?
SIJs = thicker cartilage on sacral side, denser cartilage on iliac side
disc of pubic symphysis
What resists tension/distraction?
ligaments and muscles
What resists shear forces?
interlocking grooves and ridges in SIJ, ligaments and muscles
What resists torsion/twist?
ridges and grooves of non-synovial part of SIJ, sacral ligaments, muscles
