Q

What is the cardiac output and how is it distributed?

A

5000ml/min. each organ gets a different percentage, and of this their oxygen consumption varies too

Q

What is the pattern between cardiac output and oxygen consumption?

A

generally organs with a higher cardiac output have a higher oxygen consumption. there are 3 exceptions.

Q

What are the 3 exceptions for the blood-O2 consumption difference?

A

Skin - blood more for thermoregulation that oxygen. Kidney - blood more for filtration than O2. Heart - consumes way more O2 than its cardiac output.

Q

What controls the flow rate?

A

change in pressure/resistance. change in pressure is mean arterial pressure - central venous pressure. resistance is controlled by arterioles.

Q

What is the role of arterioles?

A

like taps. wide lumen and contract to control blood flow
controls resistance and allows regional redirection of blood

Q

What is the aorta?

A

accepts blood from left ventricle at high pressure. thick wall elastic artery with wide lumen and low resistance

Q

What are venules?

A

capacitance vessels - store blood. wide lumen, low resistance. store 2/3 of body’s blood. can increase in size to store more/less

16
Q

What prevents the heart valves from inverting?

A

tendonae - tenenous cords attaching to capillaries at base of heart.

17
Q

Which valves are semilunar and what does that mean?

A

aortic and pulmonary valves. open when heart is in systole but closed during diastole while blood is filling the lungs

18
Q

Which valves are tricuspid and bicuspic?

A

tricuspid is 3 cuffs - all but mitral (left)
