Week 1 - Overview of the Function of the Heart Flashcards
What’s the function of the heart?
Supply the brain with oxygen
What does the CVS transport?
Blood, nutrients, metabolites, hormones, heat
What is the general circulation of the heart?
right heart - pulmonary circulation - left heart - systemic circulation
What is the cardiac output and how is it distributed?
5000ml/min. each organ gets a different percentage, and of this their oxygen consumption varies too
What is the pattern between cardiac output and oxygen consumption?
generally organs with a higher cardiac output have a higher oxygen consumption. there are 3 exceptions.
What are the 3 exceptions for the blood-O2 consumption difference?
Skin - blood more for thermoregulation that oxygen. Kidney - blood more for filtration than O2. Heart - consumes way more O2 than its cardiac output.
What controls the flow rate?
change in pressure/resistance. change in pressure is mean arterial pressure - central venous pressure. resistance is controlled by arterioles.
What is the role of arterioles?
like taps. wide lumen and contract to control blood flow
controls resistance and allows regional redirection of blood
What are arteries?
muscular and wide lumen, low resistance. strong, thick, non elastic wall.
What is the aorta?
accepts blood from left ventricle at high pressure. thick wall elastic artery with wide lumen and low resistance
What are venules?
capacitance vessels - store blood. wide lumen, low resistance. store 2/3 of body’s blood. can increase in size to store more/less
What splits the heart?
septum
where does the right heart receive blood from?
superior and inferior vena cava
What are the 4 valves in the heart?
tricuspid between right atrium and ventricle. mitral between left atrium and ventricle. aortic and pulmonary valve.
Where does the left heart receive and send blood to?
received from 4 pulmonary veins, sends to aorta
