Week 1 - Intro + Geronkinesiology Flashcards
What is the percentage of older adults (OA) who claim that they do not have enough time to exercise?
a) 0%
b) 25%
c) 50%
d) 75%
c) 50%
By how many years do women outlive men?
Around 4 years
By 2025, the population over the age of 65 will be greater than…
20% of the total population in 6 countries
What is the Canadian percentage of Total Population Aged 65 and Over? And where were we ranked worldwide?

c) 16%
d) 20%
d) 20%
&

What is the median age of the Quebec population?
a) 39
b) 41
c) 43
d) 45
b) 41
Right now, Canada has more seniors than children. 1 in 5 Canadians is at least 65 years old. If the current population trends continue, it is estimated that seniors will outnumber children by a factor of ___ in 20 years time.
a) 3:1
b) 3:2
c) 3:1.5
b) 3:2
OA population is projected to…
Increase to nearly 1 billion by 2023
What are the challenges associated with an increase in older adult population?
- Rising medical costs associated with chronic diasbility
- FIscal shortfall in health and social security
- Labor shortage
What are the implications and actions of a decrease in the birth rate and a decline in the death rate in Canada?
The implication are:
- increase in medical costs, because people are getting older and a lot of them are in the hospital
- Burden on health and social services
- Social dynamics, isolation is more prominent in OA and it has asimpact on the body + increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs)
The actions that need to be taken:
- World-wide movement to help promote active lifestyles in all populations at all ages in order to reduce the number of years people live with chronic disabilities as well as increase employment rate and decrease medical costs.
What is an Active Life Expectancy?
It refers to the number of expected years of:
-physical well-being
- emotional well-being
- intellectual vigor
- functional well-being
This is also called healthy aging.
The Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines for OA recommend that adults aged 65 and older should accumulate ___ min of moderate -to vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity per week, in bouts of 10min of more.
150 minutes
What is the percentage o OA 60 - 79 that perform at least 30min of moderate to vigorous physical activity?
4.5%
What is the percentage of OA 60-79 that perform more than 150min of moderate to vigorous physical activity?
13.1%
What is the percentage of OA 60-79 that average more that 10,000 steps a day?
20.3%
What is the correlation between physical activity level and medical costs?
There is a reduction in medical costs associated with an increase in physical activity level in OA.
What is the difference in annual medical costs of active and inactive women age 45 or older without physical limitations?
Annual medical costs are nearly twice as much in inactive women compared to active women. (3000$ vs 1500$).
What is the percentage of adults 65-74 meeting the strength training recommendations?
12%
What is the percentage of adults 75+ meeting the strength training recommendations?
10%
Why is strength training crucial in OA?
It is crucial to decrease the risk of sarcopenia (muscle wasting).
What is chronological age?
It refers to the passage of time from birth in years.
What are the categories of “Old Age”?
- 65-74 = young/old
- 75-84 = middle/old
- 85-99 = old/old
- 100+ = oldest/old
How many centenarians worldwide and what is the projected number for 2050?
There are over 1 million centenarians worldwide. It is projected to grow to 3.2 million by 2050.
What is biological age or senescence?
It refers to a group of processes within the body that eventually lead to:
- loss of adaptability
- loss of flexibility
- disease
- physical impairments
- functional limitations
- disability
- death
It is also known as primary aging. This is why staying active is important because it will take more time to get there.
What is functional age?
It refers to one’s functional fitness in comparison with others within the same age bracket & gender. Functional fitness includes endurance and flexibility.
Physical fitness impairments can have a direct impact on a person’s functional abilities.
What are the 5 levels of physical function? And how does that relate to the normal process of aging?
- Physically elite
- high level sports competition
- olympics
- high risk sports - Physically fit
- moderate physical work
- all endurance sports - Physically independent
- very light physical work (e.g., walking, gardening, golf, can pass all IADLs [instrument activity of daily living]) - Physically frail
- light housekeeping
- food preparation
- grocery shopping
- can be home bound - Physically dependent
- needs home or institutional care
- cannot pass some or all BADLs (basic activities of daily living –> walking, bathing, dressing, etc.)
As we grow older, the normal process of aging is to move down on the scale (5 levels) at a variable speed. Speed of decline will depend on many factors including lifestyle (exercise, nutrition) and genetics predisposition.
Who is Ed Whitlock?
He is a Canadian long-distance runner. He became the first oldest person to run a marathon in less than 3 hours at the age of 69. And continued to maintain this record at the age of 74.
What is usual aging?
It is the gradual decline in body function, leading to physical impairment, disease and functional limitations, and eventually the onset of disability and death. It is the way most people age.
What is pathological aging?
It is characterized by premature disability and death. This is an increase incidence in individuals genetically predisposed to certain disease or having negative lifestyles. The decline is faster.
What is successful aging?
It is better than average physioplogical and psychological characteristics in late life and healthy genes.
What is Gerokinesiology?
Gero means older adults. SO it is a specialized area of study in kinesiology that focuses on understanding how physical activity influences all aspects of health and well-being in the older adult population.
