what is mental health
the state of wellbeing in which each individual is able to realize own potential, cope with normal stresses of life to work productively, fruitfully and make a contribution to the community
what is mental illness
alterations in cognition, mood or behaviour coupled with significant distress and impaired functioning

what is the mental health act

allows designated facility to HOLD the person for assessment and treatment without consent

what forms are involved & for what in the involuntary consent of a patient under MH act
form 1 - hold for assessment
form 3/4/4a - hold for assessment and treatment
what is a form 1 hold (who completes it, how long does it last, its purpose, what will you notify the client with, what do you have to conduct)
- completed by physician
- admitted for a risk of harm to themselves or others (immediate safety concern)
- lasts 72 hours for assessment by psychiatrist
- must conduct serious harm test
- notify client with form 42
serious harm test (what 6 things does it consist of)
- has threatened or attempted to cause bodily harm to themself
- has behaved or is behaving violently towards another person or has caused bodily harm or fear of to another person
- has shown or is showing a lack of competence to care for themself
AND physician is of the opinion that person is suffering from mental disorder of a nature that will likely result in… - serious bodily harm to the person

- serious bodily harm to the patient
- serious bodily harm to another person
- serious physical impairment of the person unless the patient remains in the custody of a psychiatric facility
AND the patient is not suitable for admission or continuation as an informal or voluntary patient
what is a community treatment order
mandatory outpatient treatment plan that allows clients to live out in the community as long as they are following their medication or treatment orders, involves close monitoring
what is malalignment
