Week 1-ICF Flashcards
International Classification of Functioning, Disability & Health
ICF
-framework for measuring, describing function & Disability at both individual and population levels
Four principles of the ICF
- Universality
- Parity
- Neutrality
- Environmental Influence
Universality
-should be applicable to ALL people irrespective of health in all contexts
Parity
-no distinction between different health conditions
-switch focus from the health condition to functioning
Neutrality
-definitions are worded in neutral language
-used to record both the positive and negative aspects of functioning and disability
Environmental Influence
-important role of the environment on peoples functioning
Two components of the ICF
- Funcioning & disability
- Contextual Factors
Functioning & Disability
- Body Structure
- Body Function
- Activity Limitations
- Participation Restriction
Body Structure
anatomical parts of the body (what it is)
Body Function
physiological function of body systems (what it does)
Impairments
problems in body function or structure such as significant deviation/loss
Activity
execution of a task or action by an individual
Activity Limitations
difficulties an individual may have in executing activities
Participation
involvement in a life situation
Participation Restriction
problems an individual may experience in involvement in life situations
Contextual Factors
- Environmental Factors
- Personal Factors
Environmental Factors
-make up the physical, social, attitudinal environment in which people live and conduct their lives
-external to the individual and can have facilitators and barriers
Facilitators
Positive influences
Barriers
negative influences
Personal Factors
-the background of an individuals life
-gender, race, age, fitness, lifestyle, education, upbringing, experiences, etc.
Function
-positive/neutral aspects of the interaction between health condition and contextual factors
Disability
-impairments, limitations, & restrictions
-negative aspects between the health condition and contextual factors
Evidence-Based Practice (EBP)
integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values
Outcome measures
objective tools used to assess a patients status
