Week 1 - Developmental Disorders Flashcards
2 types of Congenital Disorders
- Inherited disorder
- Developmental disorder
Inherited Disorder
Caused by an abnormality in genetic make up
Developmental Disorder
Failure during process of cell division and differentiation
Ankyloglossia
- Soft Tissue Abnormality
- Extensive adhesion of tongue to the floor of the mouth
- Treatment = frenectomy
Commisural Lip Pits
- Soft Tissue Abnormality
- Epithelium lined ‘pits’ at the corner of the mouth
- Treatment: none, not harmful
Lingual Thyroid
- Soft Tissue Abnormality
- Small mass of thyroid tissue on the tongue.
- From thyroid not migrating properly during development
- Treatment: removal if obstructing
Cyst
- Abnormal fluid filled epithelium lined sac or cavity
- Treatment: usually removal
Developmental Cyst Properties
- can cause expansion of bone
- can be intraosseous or extraosseous
- appear as well circumscribed radiolucenies
- unilocular or multilocular
A cyst forming around the crown of an unerupted tooth such as the 3rd molar
Dentigerous Cyst (aka follicular cyst)
A cyst that creates a ‘balloon’ on the gingiva/soft tissue.
Eruption Cyst
A cyst that develops in place of a tooth, usually a 3rd molar
Primordial Cyst
A cyst seen in the mand 3rd molar region that can require curettage to treat as it has a high recurrence rate
Odontogenic Keratocyst (OKC) (aka KOT)
A cyst that is lined by odontogenic epithelium and features ghost cells microscopically
Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst (COC)
A cyst seen most often in the mand cuspid/premolar region on the lateral surface of the root. Most often in males.
Intraosseous: Lateral Periodontal Cyst
Extraosseous: Gingival Cyst (seen clinically)
Multilocular: Botryoid Odontogenic cyst
Anodontia
Developmental lack of ALL teeth
Hypodontia
Lack of one or more teeth
- tends to be familial or component of a syndrome
Most common missing deciduous tooth
Mand incisor
Most common missing adult teeth
3rd molars
Max laterals,
Mand 2nd premolar
Supernumerary Teeth
Extra Teeth resulting from formation of extra tooth buds
Most often seen in the max
Multiple: Gardner syndrome
Supernumerary tooth located between the max incisors
Mesiodens
Supernumerary tooth located distal to the 3rd molar
Distomolar
Microdontia
- One or more teeth are smaller than normal
- Single tooth more common
- Max laterals and max 3rd molars
Generalized relative micro/macrodontia
Normal teeth appearing small in a large jaw, or small in a large jaw
Macrodontia
One or more teeth larger than usual
