Week 1 Cranial Nerves Flashcards
1
Q
what are the five functional capacities that cranial nerves can carry
A
- motor fibers to voluntary striated muscles (somatic motor/general somatic efferent)
- motor fibers to involuntary muscles; smooth and glands (general visceral efferent)
- sensory from the skin and mucous touch, taste, smell etc. membranes (general somatic afferent) CN 5, 7, 9, 10.
- sensation from the viscera (general visceral afferent) from carotid body, lungs, heart, GI tract etc.
- unique sensations like tastes from visceral afferent and special senses from somatic afferent
2
Q
which nerves are purely motor
A
CN 3, 6, 11, 12 and the motor root of CN 5
3
Q
Olfactory nerve function
A
special sensory (special visceral afferent) sense of smell.
4
Q
where are the olfactory receptor neuron cell bodies found
A
olfactory organ
5
Q
where is the olfactory organ
A
roof of the nasal cavity along the nasal septum and medial wall of the superior nasal concha
