Week 1-Chapter 1 Flashcards
5 products that come from rangelands
Energy, Water, Food, Climate Change Absorption, Endangered Species Protection
Difference between grazing and browsing?
GRAZING: consumption of standing forage (edible grasses and Forbes).
BROWSING: consumption of edible leaves and woody twigs (trees and shrubs).
Define Rangeland.
Uncultivated land that provides the necessities of life for grazing and browsing animals.
Define Range Managment.
Is the manipulation of rangeland components to get the optimum combinations of good and services on a sustained basis.
Difference between pasture and rangelands?
The difference is that pastures are periodically cultivated to maintain introduced (non native) forage species, and agronomic inputs like irrigation.
5 basic concepts upon which range management is based?
- Rangeland is a renewable source.
- Energy from the sun can be captured and harvested by grazers.
- Rangelands provide food and fiber at a low cost compared to those associated with cultivated lands.
- Rangeland productivity is determined by topography, characteristics of the soil and climate.
- Products such as food, fiber, water, recreation, wildlife, timber and minerals are harvested from rangelands.
As a range manager, what would you prefer to do?
