citizens become ‘shut-out’ of politics an becoming disillusioned by politics

issues become the focus for political debate
expectation on gov’t to tackle the issue
gov’t can be held accountable for failure to deal with issue

increased levels of public disillusionment and distrust of politicians and other political institutions

based on the idea that without a rule we would engage in antagonistic relationships between groups

what is agonism?
conflict is ordered and regulated by the ‘rules of the games’ which is democracy and a democratic system.
why has agonistic politics been threatened?
de-politicisation is threatening the solution, becoming too ubiquitous which is a post-political condition.
not enough space for public debate and measured conflict. increasing the risk of antagonistic and violent relations, rise of populism.
