WEEK 1 Flashcards
What is matter?
- All matter consists of particles known as atoms
- Atoms are indestructible
- In pure elements atoms are identical
- Different elements differ in properties
What constitutes the atom of an element?
The number of protons determines which element it is
What are reactions?
reactions are where bonds between atoms break and reform into different arrangements.
What forms bonds?
electrons
What are the two types of electrons?
- Core electrons=do not participate in bonding
- Valence electrons=outer electrons that determine type of bond
What is the number of electrons each shell can hold?
-2,8,8,18,18,32,32
What is the Octet rule?
-atoms are very stable when the have a full outer shell
Which group of elements has full outer shells?
the nobel gases, group 18
What are ionic bonds?
ionic bonds are caused by electrostatic attraction between a cation and an anion. can be elements or compounds
Rules to naming salts
Cation=first one uses elements name
Anion=second name replace end with -ide
Anion(if polyatomic)with oxygen, -ite or -ate
What are covalent bonds?
covalent bonds are where atoms share valence electrons to fill there outer shells
Define homonuclear
molecules have all the same element covalently bonded
Define heteronuclear
molecules have more than one element bonded together
