Indirect: save main idea for conclusion and lead audience through background to
resolution
What is direct communications
“Bottom Line” or “Executive” Approach, state main idea at the beginning
When to apply direct or indirect ?
Indirect Method should be applied to audiences who are uninformed and require background information and details or maybe hostile towards your idea
Direct method should be applied to audiences who are informed and require little background information
What are advantages of using the direct method?
- Improves Comprehension
- Audience Oriented
- Saves Time
What are the 5 steps for persuading?
- Attention Step: capture interest
- Need Step: identifies scope of issue
- Satisfaction Step: tell audience what your vision is
- Visualize: Show audience how they will benefit from proposal
- Action Step: tell your audience EXACTLY what you want them to do
What is Communication Fidelity:
degree of correspondence between message intended by source and message understood by receiver
“difference between how a message is meant vs how it is received”
Relational Communication
Relational: involves the ability to interact effectively and ethically
Transactional Communication
a cooperative activity in which people adapt to each other
