Tone
Tone is how the author feels about the subject they are writing about. The author will use diction and syntax to create a MOOD for the reader
Tone vs Mood
Tone: The writers attitude toward the character, subject and audience of a story. PERSON
Mood: The climate or feeling of a literary work. ENVIRONMENT
Voice
The authors personality expressed through their writing style. Depicts their personality
Diction
Word choices
Ex. Colloquialism: casual form of speech such as ain’t
Syntax
Use of sentence types, structure and grammatical components
Signposts

3) Flashback
4) Words from the wiser
5) Tough questions
6) Epiphany
1) Contrast & Contradiction
When there is a sharp contrast between what we would expect and observe the character doing; their behaviour contradicts previous behaviour or well-established patterns.
“Why is the character acting this way?”
2) Repetition
When you notice events, images, or particular words that recur over a portion of the text. Known as MOTIF
“Why does this keep happening again & again?”
3) Flashbacks
When the author stops to interrupt the story with a recollection from a major character.
“ Why might this memory be important?”
4) Words from the Wiser
When a wiser usualy an older character offers advice or insight about life to the main character.
“ What is the life lesson, and how could it affect the character?”
5) Tough Questions
When a character asks themselves a really difficult question that reveal his/her inner struggles. Typically this question is rhetorical and does not have a direct answer.
“ What does this tough question make me wonder?”
6) Epiphany
When a character suddenly realizes something that shifts his/her actions or understanding of themselves, others or the world around them.
“ How might this realization change things?”
Thesis statement
Your controlling idea for your piece of writing and it answers a specific question. The question is designed to guide your thinking concerning the development of the characters in your chosen text.
Thesis Part A
Focus on choosing an ADJECTIVE to describe on INDIVIDUAL from the text
- In this short film the director demonstrates that an (adjective) individual.
Thesis Part B
Build by identifying a CAUSE for behaviour. MOTIVATION
- In this short film the director demonstrates that an (adjective) individual’s aptitude to (cause)
Thesis Part C
Build again by identifying the EFFECT or result. CHARACTER SHIFT.
- In this short film the director demonstrates that an (adjective) individual’s aptitude to (cause) may result in their (effect)
