Week 1 Flashcards
what are the four basic electrical components?
resistors, capacitators, inductors and semi conductors
What does a resistor do?
A resistor limits the amount of current in a circuit and therefore slows the voltage as well.
what does a capacitator do?
A capacitor stores and releases energy and is used in applications for energy storage and even timed release.
what does an inductor do?
An inductor stores energy in the form a magnetic field when current flows through it. It acts as a traffic loop, slowing down changes of current by storing energy
What does a semi conductor do?
A semi conductor is a material that can conduct electricy under some circumstances but not others. It can be manipulated to act as other components
What does a function generator do?
The function generator creates different signals and waveforms such as sine, triangle and sawtooth waves. Commonly used in electronics testing and calibration
What does an oscilloscope do?
A oscillocope measures voltage at different points in a circuit
What system do we use in canada?
SI international system
What are the four rules of significant digits?
-Nonzero digits are always considered to be significant
-Zeros to the left of the first significant digit are never significance
-Zeros between non zeros are always significant
-Zeros after a decimal point followed by a nonzero number are always significant. EX 0.89000 has 5 SD or 1.823000 has 7 SD
