Thoracic Cavity
What does the cranial cavity contain?
Brain and cranial bones
What the vertebral canal
Formed by vertebral column and contains spinal cord & nerves
Which cavities are included in the thoracic cavity
Pleural, pericardial, and mediastinum
Where is the pleural cavity?
Space between the layers of the pleura that surrounds lung
Where is the mediastinum located?
Central portion of thoracic cavity between lungs; extends from sternum to vertebral column and first rib to diaphragm
What contents are in the mediastinum?
Heart, thymus, esophagus, trachea, large blood vessels
What does the abdominal cavity contain?
Stomach, spleen, liver, gallbladder, S.I, most of L.I.
What is the serous membrane of the abdominal cavity?
Peritoneum
What are the walls of the R and L compartments of the thoracic membranes lined with?
Parietal (pariet: wall) pleura (pleur: rib)
Lungs are covered with what?
Visceral pleura (viscera: organs)
What is the pleural cavity?
Fluid-filled space between the parietal and visceral pleural membranes
What is the heart surrounded by?
Pericardial membranes (peri: around, cardi: heart)
What separates the lungs into R and L cavities?
Mediastinum
