Week 1 Flashcards
Phonology
The sound system
Morphology
Word structure/”meaningful” sequences of sound
Semantics
meaning/word knowledge
Syntax
Order/sentence structure
Pragmatics
Language use in social situations
Prosody
(inflection)(variation in sound) - rate, stress patterns, intonation, pauses
Speech
-A pattern of movement
-A pattern of acoustic vibrations
Speech is the motor production of the language system
-Studied by observing the movements and by recording the acoustic signal
Acoustic
The way the sound bounces, how something sounds in a space
Phonemes
The smallest units of sound meaningless by themselves, affect overall meaning (ex. think Pat v.s. Bat)
(p and b are the phonemes)
Allophones
Variants of production of a specific phoneme (ex. kit, bucket, card)
IPA
The alphabet or symbols used to represent the sound system
5 Speech Production Systems
- Respiration
- Phonation
- Articulation
- Resonance
- Prosody
Respiration
- Clavicular vs diaphragmatic breathing
- s/z ratio
- lung capacity
Diaphragmatic
Breathing Deeply
Phonation
Production of sound in the larynx - vibration of vocal folds
