week 1 Flashcards
What is Intra-role conflict
when there is uncertainty between an individuals gender role and the cultural steriotype
What is inter-role conflict
When a persons gender conflicts with other roles (work, social, relationship etc).
gender identity disorder:
A DSM-5 label for those whose gender identity is not aligned with their sex, also calls this gender dysphoria (though merv questions whether we should be pathologising these people).
What are the three levels of sexism?
Overt, covert, and subtle.
What was tahiti’s stance on gender?
that there is only ONE (human being). Androgynous, same roles, equal opportunity, no pressure to behave differently. nowords for gender, and no male or female pronouns.
What about the Berdache people? (native American tribe).
they recognise four genders, male and female (as traditional) and male (a biological male who would fulfil female roles such as childcare, and dress as female, held in high regard) and biological female who would dress as male, become a warrior, and marry women.
What about the dominican republic?
small region where one in 90 babies are born bio female and rased thus, but during pubery hormones flow and rapidly change to male (but they have no mental health adjustment problems, everyone is chill with it).
What are the consequences of non-acceptence of different gender?
trans ppl 10x more likely to commit suicide
what about research on men vs women? much change overtime?
yes. research in 1960 found females avoided leadership roles bc they lacked achievement motivation (yuck) but now theres no difference in motivation, and most research focuses on social setting (toxic culture, glass cieling etc).
Tell us about Hyde (2005).
a meta analysis of 128 studies on gender differences. Result: 30% of studies had gender effect sizes close to 0. 48% were small, and not clinically significant. only 22% had large differences. the conclusion? gender is more similar than different. these differences were in motor performance, sexuality, and in agression (though merv reckons all these are socially constructed).
