Week 09 Flashcards
What is DTE?
Data terminal equipment (DTE) is the customer’s endpoint device on the WAN. The DTE communicates on the LAN and is generally owned by the customer.
What is DCE?
Data communication equipment (DCE) is the carrier’s endpoint device for the WAN. DCE communicates on the WAN and is usually owned by the ISP
What is CPE?
Customer premises equipment (CPE) is the equipment located on the customer’s premises
What devices are commonly found near the demarc?
NIU (network interface unit) - connects the ISP’s local loop to the customer’s network
- Line driver - essentially a repeater that can boost the signal across greater distances
- CSU/DSU (channel service unit/ data service unit) serves as the endpoint for dedicated connection between an ISP and a customer
What is broadband?
Broadband is a type of WAN connectivity where cables and bandwidth are shared between multiple customers. Bandwidth is asymmetrical, meaning download speeds are faster than upload speeds
What is DIA?
Dedicated internet access (DIA) is a type of WAN connectivity where bandwidth is dedicated to a single customer. Bandwidth is symmetrical, meaning download and upload speeds are about the same
What is DSL?
DSL (digital subscriber line) is a WAN connection method that operates over the PSTN (public switched telephone network) and supports multiple data and voice channels over a single line
What are the three types of DSL?
- ADSL (asymmetric DSL) - faster download speeds than upload speeds
- VDSL (very high bit rate DSL) - faster than ADSL, is asymmetric
- SDSL (symmetric DSL) - has equal download and upload speeds
What are the three types of DSL?
- ADSL (asymmetric DSL) - faster download speeds than upload speeds
- VDSL (very high bit rate DSL) - faster than ADSL, is asymmetric
- SDSL (symmetric DSL) - has equal download and upload speeds
What are HFC networks?
Hybrid fibre coaxial networks use fibre optic cabling to connect the cable company’s distribution centre to distribution hubs
What are the 3 different types of fibre cabling that ISPs offer?
FTTN (fibre to the node)
FTTC (fibre to the curb)
FTTB (fibre to the building)
What are leased lines?
leased lines provide dedicated bandwidth on fibre optic connections. Leased lines have the benefits of dedicated bandwidth, symmetrical bandwidth and SLA-backed guarantee
What are leased lines?
leased lines provide dedicated bandwidth on fibre optic connections. Leased lines have the benefits of dedicated bandwidth, symmetrical bandwidth and SLA-backed guarantee
What is WiMAX
Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access is a type of network that uses line of sight transmissions.
What are the different generations of cellular technology?
1G (first gen) - was analog
2G (second gen) - digital transmissions up to 240Kbps
3G (third gen) - data rates up to 384Kbps
4G (fourth gen) - all IP network for data and voice
5G (fifth gen) - min speed of 1Gbps, max of 20Gbps
