weeds Flashcards
Allelopathy:
Production of toxins by plants which
can affect neighbouring plants
why are seeds controlled in crops
reduce compition, avoid pest and disease problems, minimise harvesting difficulties, improve crop quality, stop weed seed banks increaseing
why is there so many seeds in soil
each weed plant produces thousands of seeds, these seeds will only germinate if conditions are suitbale
and they can last for years or decades untill conditions do suit
type of weeds likely to estblish
in crops annual weeds are likely to establish as soil will be bare for a certain period.
how to controll weeds
quick establishment of crops, pasture cover year round to stop weed establishing.
why are perennials harder to kill than annuals
perennuals have dorman buds and stored food reserves.
due to tap root and creeping root system they can be har to kill.
how are perennials more likely in certain habitats
they dont like frequently disturbed soil as they have a slower growing cycle but dominate when they do not have to re establish.
