plant interactions Flashcards
amensalism
Any relationship between organisms of different species in which one organism is inhibited or destroyed while the
other organism remains unaffected.
commensalism
An association between two organisms in which one benefits and the other derives neither benefit nor harm.
competition
The negative effect on growth, reproduction or survival that a plant has on another by consuming, or controlling access
to, a resource that is limited in availability.
CSR
The three strategies are
competitor, stress tolerator, and ruderal. These strategies each thrive best in a unique combination of either high or
low intensities of stress & disturbance.
ecotype
A plant population within a species that has developed unique characteristics that help it survive in the natural world
Gause’s principle
Or competitive exclusion principle. Two species competing for the same resources cannot stably coexist. As a
consequence there needs to an evolutionary shift or extinction.
grazing resistance
mechanisms
avoidance mechanisms and tolerance mechanisms
interspecific
competition
Competition for resources that occurs among different plant species
intraspecific
competition
Or the density effect, is the competition for resources can occurs between individual plants of the same species.
plant competition
Is the attempt of neighbouring plants to utilise the same resources of light, water, soil mineral nutrients or space
plant competitor
Is a plant (species or individual) specialised at capturing resources.
predation
The situation where an advantage is gained through “feeding” off the other species
resource
A plant resource is something needed for plant growth that may be above ground and includes light & occasionally
space; and below ground, and includes water & nutrients.
self-thinning
If a population of plants is allowed to grow bigger with time there is eventually a critical
point where further size increase is necessarily accompanied by death of some members of the population.
yield components
Contributing parts to total yield.
