A type of Internet domain assigned to URLs which are business or commercial entities.
URL
Uniform Resource Locator: a protocol for specifying addresses on the Internet. An address that identifies a particular file on the Internet, usually consisting of the protocol, as http, followed by the domain name.
Absolute URL
Complete internet address that takes one to the exact directory or file of a website. Starts with a protocol (http: https: ftp: ect ) example: http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/absolute-URL.html
Relative URL
URLs that reference files on the same server with in the same directory (folder) . Does not contain a protocol (http, https, ftp, ect) example: images/star.png
AUP
Acceptable Use Policy- agreement on what rules to follow when using a network or computer.
Authentication
To collect information from the user Example:username and password
bandwidth
Used to measure the amount of time it takes for a web page to fully load. Measured in bits per second.
blog
A Web site (or section of a Web site) where users can post a chronological, up-to-date e-journal entry of their thoughts.
copyright
The exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, and sell a literary, musical, dramatic, or artistic work, including computer programs, web art, graphics, photos, web pages.
default
A value, action or setting that a computer system assumes, unless the user gives an explicit instruction to the contrary.
domain name
The “address” or URL of a particular Web site.
encoding
To format (electronic data) according to a standard format. UTF-8 is the encoding for an English Language keyboard
host
A computer that stores and sends requested web pages and other files.

HTTP
Hypertext Transport Protocol. The transmission standard used to send an HTML document across the World Wide Web.
Intranet
A secure network within an organization that uses internet technologies to connect its employees and customers through a secure website.
IP address
Internet Protocol Address. A uniquely assigned numeric address for each computer connected to the Internet.
ISP
Internet Service Provider. A service company that provides a user with an account on a host-computer having access to the Internet.
Meta tag
An HTML code that resides in the head section of a web page and includes information about the page, such as keywords, and descriptions.

How information travels over a network.

The common set of standards and rules ensure that all computers connected to the network have a common ground from which to work.
Proxy
A proxy is an object that stands in for a “real” object that is stored in the local Attribute Data Store (ADS). The proxy’s proxy:resource URI that is a link to the “real” object. To support a visual representation of a proxy, proxies have optional background color, image and imageType attributes.

Designed to help a user search for information on the World Wide Web. Example: Google
HTTPS
A web site that uses encrypted transmissions and takes other appropriate measures to ensure the protection of sensitive information such as credit card information.
TCP/IP
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. A network communication protocol used on the internet and computer networks to transmit data using packets.
Validation (website)
Validating a website is the process of ensuring that the pages on the website conform to the norms or standards defined by various organizations
Verification
The act of reviewing inspecting or testing in order to establish a document that a product service or system meets regulatory or technical standards.
WAN
Wide Area Network- An example of this would be phone lines, radio waves and the internet.
WYSIWYG
What You See Is What You Get (whiz-ee-wig). Refers to any technology that enables you to see images on screen exactly as they will appear when displayed.
