Weatherng i Flashcards
What is weathering
Weathering is the breaking down of rocks and soil that are exposed to weather broken down material does not move from the place weathering occurred
What is mechanical weathering
Mechanical weathering breaks up rocks into smaller pieces by putting pressure on the rock
What is freeze thaw action
It occurs high up in mountainous areas where there is a lot of precipitation and the temperature regularly rise and fall below freezing point
Steps of freeze thaw action
During the day water seeps into cracks
in rocks
At night water temperatures fall below freezing point water cracks and freezes and expands by 9% putting pressure on the rock
Process continues Overtime widening cracks and joints in rock causing it to weaken and eventually piesces fall of

What is chemical weathering
Chemical weathering is when rocks are dissolved because of chemical reaction
