Weathering the storm Flashcards
How does latitude affect the temperature?
Temperatures closer to the equator are typically warmer.
How does altitude affect the climate?
Temperature drops as elevation or height increases.
How does distance from the sea affect the climate?
Ocean heats up and cools down much more slowly than land
What is convectional rainfall?
When heated air from the earth surface rises along with water vapour and gets condensed and forms clouds.
What is orographic rainfall?
Air rises and cools, forming clouds and rain.
What is the continental climate zone?
Colder zones, which are the transition between mild and polar climates.
What is frontal rainfall?
cold air meets warm air in a ‘weather front’
What is the maritime climate zone?
Climatic characteristics conditioned by the position close to a sea.
What is the tropical climate zone?
The tropical climate zone gets more exposer to the sea therefore warm all year round.
What is the polar climate zone?
Usually a temperature below freezing, icy and covered in snow most of the time.
Effects of climate change
-Hotter temperature
-Severe storms
-increased droughts
-Rising and warming oceans
-loss of species
-Not enough food
-Poverty and displacement
What is global warming?
A gradual increase of the overall temperature of the Earths atmosphere generally attributed to the green house effect caused by increase levels of carbon dioxide, CFCS and other pollutants.
What is the greenhouse effect?
Caused by carbon dioxide released by fossil fuels and other gases such as methane. The gases then get trapped within the atmosphere.
