Weathering On A Coastline Flashcards
Salt weathering
1) caused by saline (salty water)
2) enters pores or cracks in a high tide
3) as tide goes out and the rocks dry, water evaporates forming salt crystals, they expand and put pressure on the rocks causing pieces of them to fall off
Chemical weathering
1) breakdown of rock by changing its chemical composition
2) for example, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere dissolves in rainwater forming a weak carbonic acid
3) this reacts with a rock that contains calcium carbonate so rocks are gradually dissolved
Freeze thaw
1) water freezing in cracks and expands under 0°c, once expanded this causes pieces of rock to fall off
Wetting and drying
Water getting into clay on rocks and expanding, when dry, they break fragments and fall off
