Plate Tectonics Flashcards

1
Q

How does slab pull take place?

A

1) at destructive plate margins, denser crust is forced under less dense crust
2) the sinking of the plate edge pulls the rest of the plate towards the boundary due to its density, causes it to sink in the mantle

Q

How does ridge push happen

A

1) at constructive plate margins, magma rises to the surface to make new crust which is very hot, it heats surrounding rocks which expand and form a slope
2) new crust cools and becomes denser, gravity causes denser rocks to move downslope, away from plate margin
3) this puts pressure on the plate and causes them to move apart
4) known as gravitational sliding

Q

How does sea floor spreading occur?

A

As plates move apart, magma rises and cools to form new crust, over time this happens again and sea floor gets wider

Q

How does a Rift Valley occur?

A

Played diverge beneath land, rising magma causes crust to fracture, as plates pull away, the crust drops down to form a Rift Valley

Q

How does an ocean ridge occur?

A

Where diverging plates are moving apart, underwater volcanoes erupt and can build above sea

Q

How does a Fold mountain occur?

A

Two plates pull together when they collide, rocks and debris are wrapped and folded into Rocky out crops, hills and mountains and entire mountain ranges
