weathering, erosion, soil Flashcards
weathering
PROCESS of breaking down rock
uniformitarianism
says the processes that change earths surface now are the same that changed Earth’s surface in the past
erosion
process of sediment moving from one place to another
deposition
PROCESS of sediment being laid down
mechanical weathering
a process that does not change the composition of the rock as it breaks down
examples; animal actions, freezing and thawing, plant growth, release of pressure, abrasion
chemical weathering
a process that changes the composition of the rock as it breaks it down
examples; water, oxygen, acid rain, living organisms, carbon dioxide
soil
a mixture of rock particles, minerals, decayed organic material, water, and air.
bedrock
the solid layer of rock beneath the soil which slowly weathers into particles that make soil
humus
the dark colored material formed from the remains of plants and animals. this is found in the top layer of soil.
