Plate Tectoics Flashcards
Pangaea
Supercontinent that existed 300 million years ago
Continental Drift
Hypothesis that the continents were once joined together and have slowly moved across the Earth’s surface
Sea-floor spreading
Process of molten rock rising from the mantle creating new crust
Mid-ocean ridge
Undersea mountain range
Subduction
Process by which oceanic crust sinks under continental crust and into the mantle
Deep-ocean trench
A deep valley on the ocean floor
Plate tectonics
Theory that Earth’s plates are in constant motion, floating on the mantle
Fault
Breaks/cracks in Earth’s surface
Divergent boundary
A boundary where two plates move away from each other
Convergent boundary
A boundary where two plates come together
Transform boundary
A boundary where two plates slide past each other in opposite directions
Constructive forces
Any natural process that builds up Earth’s surface
Destructive forces
Any natural process that breaks down Earth’s surface
