Weathering, erosion, deposition Flashcards
vocab: evaporation
Evaporation is the process of a substance in a liquid state changing to a gaseous state due to an increase in temperature and/or pressure.
vocab:condensation
Condensation is the process by which water vapor in the air is changed into liquid water. In other words, the water in the air, a gas known as water vapor, from your hot shower cooled when it met the surface of the cold mirror. This caused the water vapor to condense, or turn into its liquid form.
vocab: precipitation
Precipitation is any type of water that forms in the Earth’s atmosphere and then drops onto the surface of the Earth. Water vapor, droplets of water suspended in the air, builds up in the Earth’s atmosphere before precipitating.
What is the relationship between surface area and weathering rate?
Rocks that have a large surface area exposed to running water, wind and other weathering agents will erode more quickly than rocks with less exposed surface area.
How do rivers and glaciers affect the shape of valleys?
V-shaped valleys and river plain valleys are formed by flowing water. U-shaped valleys are formed by flowing ice, or glaciers. ..
What agent of erosion causes the most change on the earth’s surface?
?Ice is most powerful. Water? Wind?
what climate favors mechanical weathering and chemical weathering?
Mechanical weathering occurs more in hot, wet. climates. Chemical weathering also occurs in area of high temperatures and greater rainfall.
What are the % of freshwater and saltwater on Earth doing?
?
identify if an example describes weathering, erosion or deposition
Look at examples in your book or online and identify each of the processes.
Vocab: mechanical weathering
The process through which large rocks are broken into smaller rocks by a process. Water freezing and thawing is an example.
Vocab: Chemical weathering
Rocks are broken down by chemical processes such as reactions between chemicals in the rock and water, the rock being oxidizes, i.e., the chemicals in the rock interact with oxygen in the air.
vocab: erosion
The process by which the surface of the earth is worn away by actions of water, glaciers, winds, chemical reactions.
vocab: deposition
Sediments, soil and rocks are added to a landform or landmass.
vocab: Oxbow Lake
An oxbow lake is a U-shaped lake that forms when a wide meander of a river is cut off, creating a free-standing body of water.
vocab: Mass wasting
Mass wasting or mass movement is the movement of a large mass of rock, soil and debris downward due to the pull of gravity, e.g., a mud slide.
