WEATHERING & EROSION Flashcards
CHEMICAL WEATHERING
decomposition of rock resulting in a change of composition
WEATHERING
breakdown of rock in situ
HYDRATION
makes clay minerals swell with addition of water & forces openings apart
HYDROLOSIS
rocks sit in water & break down, changes chemical composition and gets a clay like texture
OXIDATION
oxygen in air reacts with iron in rocks turning red/orange & creates oxides
CARBONATION
carbonic acid in rain reaches with calcium carbonate in limestone, joints widened in peddling planes = landforms
PHYSICAL/MECHANICAL WEATHERING
disintegration on rock into smaller particles without change to chemical composition
BIOLOGICAL WEATHERING
breakdown of rock by living things (can be chemical or physical)
