Weathering And Geosphere Power Point Flashcards
Weather is…
The conditions of the atmosphere in an area at a given time
Climate
The average weather pattern in an area over time
Ocean currents
A warm ocean that brings water and air from tropic to Western Europe
Orographic
Orographic rain occur when air moves from low altitude to higher altitude creating humidity, clouds and eventually precipitation
Rain shadow
A rain shadow is the dry area on the leeward side of a mountain range. The mountain blocks the rain from the windward side of the mountain creating a shadow of dry, cool air
Convection
Rising heated water vapor that form clouds and causes heated air to rise even higher
Frontal Precipitation
Caused by a cold air mass meeting a warm air mass, this system was called this because the precipitation tends to occur along the front of the air mass
Frontal precipitation cold front
Cold front originate near the poles and move towards the equator
Frontal precipitation warm front
Warm front originate from the equator or warm bodies of water and move towards the poles
Hurricane
Form only in the tropics over warm waters, caused by a series of convection currents that create a high pressure axis around which it spins
Tornado
Caused by trapped warm air under heavier cold air masses, found in flat areas in the dub tropic
Blizzard
They are characterized by temperature below 20 degrees and accompanied by winds THATS are at least 35 mph or greater
Droughts
A prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall
Flood
Many waterways flood on a yearly basis due to tropical or subtropical rain pattern, also caused by tropical storms like hurricane THATS cause flood by a storm surge or constant rain
