weathering Flashcards
what is weathering
involves the decomposition of disintegration of rock in its original place at or close to the ground surface
different types of weathering
biological
chemical
mechanical
what is biological weathering
involves living organisms such as nesting birds, burrowing rabbits and plant roots
chemical weathering
carbonation
hydrolysis
oxidation
mechanical weathering
freeze-thaw
saltweathering.
what is carbonation
CO2 dissolved in rainwater forms a week carbonic acid. this reacts with calcium carbonate (limestone and chalk) to make bicarbonate , which is soluble and can be carried away by water
what is oxidisation
oxygen dissolved in water reacts with iron-rich minerals causing rocks to crumble.
what is hydrolysis
acidic rain water reacts with minerals in granite causing it to crumble
what is saltweathering
crystals of salt grows in cracks and holes, expanding to cause rock fragments to flake away
