Weathering Flashcards
What are the three types of weathering?
Chemical, physical and biological
What type of weathering is acid rain dissolving rocks an example of?
This is an example of chemical weathering
What type of weathering is vines growing into cracks in a building an example of?
This is an example of biological weathering
What is physical weathering caused by?
Physical weathering is caused by changes in temperature
What is erosion?
Erosion is when sediments are transported and deposited away by water, wind, gravity or ice
What is weathering?
Weathering is breaking down something big to make it small
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
Metamorphic rocks are formed when sedimentary or igneous rocks are out under heat or pressure
How does limestone change to marble and is it a chemical or physical change?
When limestone gets hot it’s atoms rearrange themselves in a new arrangement
This makes big crystals of Calcium Carbonate which interlocks tightly, making marble harder than limestone
A new rock is formed. It’s name is marble
This is a physical change
Explain Freeze-Thaw weathering
- Rain water fills a crack in the stone
- The water freezes and expands, forcing the stone crack open
- The ice thaws out, water filling the crack again
- The water once again freezes and expands, forcing the stone crack open even further. Bits of stone may fall away.
- This process continues. This is also how pot holes are formed.
Explain onion skin weathering
- During the day the rock expands due to heat
- During the night the rock cools due to the cold
- The cycle repeats
- Layers of the rock slowly peel away
What links the formation of rocks together?
The formation of rocks is linked together using the rock cycle
