Air Mass
A large body of air with similar properties all through it
Maritime Polar Air
Cold and humid. Air mass that forms over the ocean and comes from the poles.
Continental Polar Air
Cold and dry. Land that forms over land and comes from the poles.
Maritime Tropical Air
Warm and humid. Forms over ocean.
Continental Tropical Air
Warm and dry. Forms over land
Fronts
Boundaries between two air masses. Brings weather moved by wind.
Cold Air Front
When a cold air mass meets, it causes a warm air mass to rise. Moves fast. Brings heavy precipitation.
Warm Air Front
Warm air moves (rises) over cool air.bings long periods of light drizzle. Brings warmer temperatures.
Stationary Front
Cold air mass meets a warm air mass results in little movement. Drizzles doesn’t bring heavy precipitation. Little movement or moves back and forth over the same area.
Occlusive Front
A cold air mass over takes a slower moving cold air mass and forces warm air up. The cold air continues advancing until it meets another cold air mass. Brings cooler temperatures. Usually brings more precipitation.
