Weather Hazards Flashcards
What is the global atmospheric circulation system
GACS is the system in which the air moves around the earth to try to balance the temperature. It goes as follows: At the equator the sun warms the earth which causes the air to rise, as the air rises it cools and moves out to 30 degrees north or south of the equator, the cool air then sinks creating a high pressure belt, the cool air either returns to the equator or travels to the poles.
What is the distribution of tropical storms like
They occur in between the tropics but not on the equator
Causes of a tropical storm
There needs to be 60m deep water and 27c water as well as a low pressure zone and with the coriolis effect it begins to spin and the trade winds carry it along
The primary secondary effects in typhoon Haitian
They were buildings and bridges destroyed aswell as flooding, secondary effects are people are left homeless and stagnant water attracted mosquitos and people contracted malaria
Responses in the Philippines were
Help from the military aswell as search and rescue teams and hospitals set up, longer term responses were receiving financial donations and rebuilding
How are tropical storms affected by global warming
They would become more common because 27 degree water is needed and as the earth would be becoming hotter this would be more achievable causing them to happen more
Cause of the beast from the east
As there was a high pressure belt over Scandinavia there was a large cold air mass over England
Impacts from the beast from the east
10 people died
Schools were forced to close
All transport was nearly impossible
Shortages of food
How we can show the weather is becoming more extreme
In 2018 there was a hosepipe ban that had to be enforced in northern island due to a prolonged period without rain
