Weather Hazards Flashcards
What is global atmospheric circulation?
The atmosphere is the layer of air surrounding the earths surface which extends hundreds of kilometres high
What gases does the atmosphere contain ?
Co2 , oxygen,nitrogen and water vapour
How does the earths atmosphere move ?
Constantly moves in different directions
Why does the earths atmosphere move in different directions ?
Due to earths sun energy and different pressure around the earth
What is a pressure belt ?
Air circulation creates different areas of pressure
What happens when the air rises ?
Creates low pressure
What happens when air sinks ?
Creates high pressure
What do tropical storms need ?
Very specific conditions to form
What are the conditions tropical storms need to form ?
- 5-30 degrees north and south of the equator
- sea temperature is 27 degrees celcuis or higher
- must be in area of unstable air pressure
Immediate response to tropical storms ?
- providing food ,water and shelter
- advance news warnings
- searching for trapped people
- clearing roads
Long term response to topical storms ?
- building new homes which are storm resistant
- restoring industry economy e.g food product
- investing in warning systems
Secondary effect of tropical storms ?
- 5.6 million workers lost their jobs
- lack of clean water = diseases
Primary effect of tropical storms ?
- 1 million homes destroyed
- 1.9 million homeless
- 8000 killed
