Weather, Climate And Natural Environments Flashcards
Define climate
The average weather conditions of a place taken over a period of time.
What inside the stevensons screen?
Max thermometer
Min thermometer
Wet and dry bulb thermometer
What’s outside the Stevenson screen?
Sunshine recorder
Wind vane
Rain gauge
Anemometer
Why is the stevensons screen white and made of wood?
White paint reflects off sunlight keeping it cool
Wood isn’t a heat conductor , therefore box remains cool and untouched by heat
Why is the stevensons screen kept 125cm off the ground?
Avoid strong temperature from hot ground
Why are they located above grass not concrete?
Reduce heat conduction from concrete ground - affects temp recording.
What is a sixs thermometer?
An instrument that measures the max and min temperature at the same time
What is humidity?
Amount of water vapour held in the air
What increases humidity ?
Temperature increase of air
Why is knowing the humidity of air useful?
So that forecasters predict when it is going to rain.
What is dew point?
The temperature at which air becomes cool and can no longer hold all the water vapour so some of it turns back into water droplets.
What is used to measure precipitation ?
Rain gauges
What’s used to measure air pressure
Barometers
What records wind direction?
Wind vane
How does conventional rain form?
Earth surface warmed
Air above heated rises
As rising it cools
Water vapour condenses forming clouds
Where are tropical rainforest found?
Between 0-23 north and south of the equator
Sun is directly over the equator -concentrated rays
Very wet there due to hot climate causing conventional rain
How are emergent trees adapted?
Can grow to heights of 50m
To reach the light- competition
How are tree trunks adapted?
Straight and bran less in efforts to grow tall for light
How are buttress roots adapted?
Stand above ground
Gives support for big trees
What are lianas?
Vine like plants use the large trees as a support in their efforts to reach the sunlight.
Why do leaves have drip tips?
Sheds heavy rainfall
Define desert
A desert is an area that receives less than 250mm precipitation in a year.
