Weather & Climate Flashcards
Write down the 3 main steps of the water cycle
- Evaporation- the sun evaporates water from the ground, sea, lakes etc. then turns the water into clouds.
- Condensation- when water vapour comes to gear her and forms a cloud.
- Precipitation- when a cloud releases all of the water vapour that it can no longer hold in the form of rain, hail/sleet or snow
- The water gets absorbed into the ground or runs down a mountain into the sea, lakes etc.
What are clouds measured in?
Oktas
What are clouds made up of?
Small water droplets suspended in the air. (Water vapour)
What are the 4 main types of clouds
Stratus, cumulus, cumulonimbus and cirrus clouds
What is a stratus cloud
A low, grey, layered and shapeless that usually brings a drizzle of rain, it is like a blanket of cloud over an area
What is a cumulus cloud?
They are white, fluffy and look like cotton wool, they can bring showers
What is a cumulonimbus cloud
These clouds climb high into the atmosphere and often bring heavy rain and thunderstorms
What is a cirrus cloud?
High up in the sky, they are wispy and make from ice crystals.
How is water evaporated?
Rays from the sun warm a mass of water, this turns it into water vapour. (Gas)
How are clouds formed?
The water vapour cools and condenses, as it rises it forms water droplets which gather together and form clouds.
What is transpiration?
When water gets evaporated from damp ground, trees and plants.
What is precipitation?
As the clouds pick up more water it starts to become too heavy and the cloud releases it in the form of rain, although if it is in a colder area it could fall as hail/sleet or snow
