Weather and its impact on Flight Flashcards
Composition of the Atmoshphere
Where in the atmosphere does most weather occur?
Describe the three lower levels of the atmosphere
What is the troposphere?
What is the tropopause?
What is the stratosphere?
What are the three characteristics of the Atmosphere?
Describe the three characteristics of the atmosphere
What results from the three characteristics of the atmosphere?
How is air pressure measured?
Name the two types of atmospheric pressure used in aviation:

How is lift altered?
what are the three prime factors affecting air density?
Name the three axis of rotation
Name the flight control surfaces and which axis of rotation they control
Name the systems aircraft use to combat icing:
Name the types of icing
Clear Ice
Rime Ice
Hoar Ice
Mixed Ice
Describe Clear Ice
Describe Rime Ice
Describe Hoar Ice
Describe Mixed Ice
What are the four intensities of icing?
How does ice accumulate on the ground vs in the air?
Describe effects of icing in flight
-loss of lift
-loss of aircraft control
-icing on windshield (visibility)
-icing on pitot tubes or static vents (loss of avionics indicators)
-icing on antennas - reduction in communication efficiency and they could vibrate and break
-engine carbureatos and air intakes - loss of thrust - engine failure
-propellers - loss of thrust
- rotor and stator blades - engine flame out - engine damage from ice chunks
Methods to protect aircraft from icing
- Fluids - to protect windshield and propeller blades from icing
- heating devices - two types (electrical and exhaust). they heat critical areas and prevent ice from forming in the first place (very effective)
- Rubber de icer boots - only effective after ice has formed. used to break away ice from leading edges
How do pilots avoid icing? Two methods:
How is wind described?
What are isobars?
What are Lows?
What are highs?
What are troughs and ridges?
Describe Jet Stream
What are the characteristics of Jet Streams?
Where are jet streams found in Canada?
