35
Q

What are the four intensities of icing?

36
Q

How does ice accumulate on the ground vs in the air?

37
Q

Describe effects of icing in flight

A

-loss of lift
-loss of aircraft control
-icing on windshield (visibility)
-icing on pitot tubes or static vents (loss of avionics indicators)
-icing on antennas - reduction in communication efficiency and they could vibrate and break
-engine carbureatos and air intakes - loss of thrust - engine failure
-propellers - loss of thrust
- rotor and stator blades - engine flame out - engine damage from ice chunks

38
Q

Methods to protect aircraft from icing

A
  • Fluids - to protect windshield and propeller blades from icing
  • heating devices - two types (electrical and exhaust). they heat critical areas and prevent ice from forming in the first place (very effective)
  • Rubber de icer boots - only effective after ice has formed. used to break away ice from leading edges
