We use an anemometer to measure wind speed we can also look at smoke. As the wind blows it catches the cup and spins it around. Measured in knots

The direction the wind is going in. Can be measured using a vane or a piece of ribbon. If wind is travelling from the south it is travelling northwards but it is called southerly wind.
