Weather Flashcards
Air Mass
an air mass is a volume of air defined by its temperature and water vapor content.
Continental polar
continental polar air is having low surface temperature, low moisture content, and (especially in its …
Maritime polar
a maritime polar air mass is an air mass with cool and moist conditions. they form in the northern areas of the atlantic and pacific ocean.
Maritime tropical
Maritime Tropical Air Masses warm temperatures and rich in moisture Maritime tropical air masses originate over the warm waters of the tropics and Gulf of Mexico and other inland areas close to the equator.
Continental tropical
tropical continental is a dry air mass formed over land in area close to the equator.
Front
the side or part of an object that presents itself to view or that is normally seen or used first; the most forward part of something:
Warm front
A warm front is a density discontinuity located at the leading edge of a homogeneous warm air mass, and is typically located on the equator-facing edge of an isotherm gradient.
Cold front
A cold front is defined as the leading edge of a cooler mass of air, replacing at ground level a warmer mass of air, which lies within a fairly sharp surface trough of low pressure.
Occluded front
An occluded front is formed during the process of cyclogenesis when a cold front overtakes a warm front.
Stationary front
A stationary front is a pair of air masses, neither of which is strong enough to replace the other.
Wind Vane
A wind vane is a device that measures the direction of the wind.
Rain gage
A device for collecting and measuring the amount of rain that falls.
Thermometer
An instrument for measuring and indicating temperature.
Hygrometer
an instrument for measuring the humidity of the air or a gas.
Barometer
an instrument measuring atmospheric pressure, used especially in forecasting the weather and determining altitude.
