Q

What are high and low pressure systems associated with

A

High- cool air masses sink and do not rise above to form clouds and storms so they bring clear and nice weather

Low- warm moist air conditions cause the air to rise and create clouds so they are associated with stormy weather

Q

How do we predict weather

A
  • study of weather is called meteorology
  • weather balloons in altitudes of 30km carry small radio transmitters that tell us the temp, humidity, and atmospheric pressure
  • this info is fed into a computer for analysis from many balloons across america
  • aircraft also collect info
  • weather models try to predict future weather

Q

Explain how energy from the sun reaches the earth and how its distributed

A
  • the sun’s energy reaches the earth in radiant form
  • ozone absorbs UV radiation during ozone formation, so does water vapour
  • the earth surface’s albedo determines energy absorption and reflection
    • some energy changes into heat and is used to drive the water cycle and ocean currents
    • gasses in air capture the IR and trap its energy and warm the earth (greenhouse effect)
  • energy helps in cloud formation and is absorbed by plants for photosynthesis

Q

What is a jetstream

A

Narrow region of fast moving air that is caused by the collision of air masses from the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere. The air from the north is cooler and the air from the south is warmer. High and low pressure systems get pushed and follow the jet stream so forecasters use the jet stream to locate these pressure systems.
