What is a HIWAS? How does it broadcast?
Hazardous in flight weather advisory service. Continous broadcast over navaids, shown as H on map. Listen on VOR frequency on NAV radio.
What is an ATIS? Which airports have them?
Automated terminal information services.
Airports with control tower. Gives weather, notams, runway in use. Winds in true
What is an AWOS?
Automated weather observation system.
Machine that has sensors & processors, only gives you weather. Winds in magnetic.
What is an ASOS?
Automated surface observation system
Little better than AWOS. Can give METAR reports too. Type of precipitation falling gicen & + accurate than AWOS. Winds in magnetic
What is a METAR? When is it updated?
Aviation routine weather report.
Gives current conditions @ airport
Winds in true. Updated hourly, always on the 53rd minute. Same as others but generated for computer.
What is a PIREP? How can you get one?
Pilot report for unobserved weather phenomenon.
Get by calling the briefer when on the ground or flight watch when in flight.
What is a TAF? When is it updated? How long is it good for?
Terminal aerodrome forecast
Updated every 6 hours (4x a day)
Good for 24-30 hours
Read like a METAR
What is an area forecast?
You use it when your airport doesn’t have a TAF. It gives weather for an entire region of the U.S.
What is an AIRMET?
Air men’s meteorological weather advisory.
Issued for everybody, mainly targeting smaller ACFT.
Light to moderate WX
Types of AIRMETS?
S - IFR conditions or mountain obscuration
T - moderate turbulence &/or surface winds greater than 30 Kt
Z - moderate icing & freezing level info
What is a SIGMET?
Significant meteorological weather advisory
Targets all size ACFT, intended for everybody
Sever weather
Types of SIGMETS?
Non convective - severe icing, turbulence. Dust & sand storms, volcanic ash.
Convective - severe thunderstorms, SFC winds > 50 Kts, hail > 3/4” at surface, tornadoes, embedded thunderstorms, line of thunderstorms longer than 60 miles.
What is wind shear? Where can you look to see if there is any?
Sudden change in wind speed or direction.
