15
Q

Why is there more RAINFALL in the West of the UK?

A

Many of the MOUNTAIN ranges in the British Isles occur in the West.

The moist warm air from the West hits the mountains and forces it to rise up and form clouds. It then rains as the air moves to the East.

The West is therefore more likely to experience rainfall.

Q

What is the WEATHER FORECAST?

A

People want to know what the weather is going to be like for the day or week ahead.

In order to do this, they must look up the WEATHER FORECAST.

17
Q

Where do we get WEATHER FORECASTS from?

A
  • TV
  • Radio
  • Internet
  • Mobile phones
  • Newspapers
18
Q

How are WEATHER FORECASTS created?

19
Q

What causes FLOODING?

A
  1. A river is like a big drain.
  2. The rain that falls on the land around a river, drains into it.
  3. The water is carried out to the sea by the river.
  4. If the river fills up too quickly, the river bursts its banks and overflows onto the land - this is a flood.
20
Q

What makes FLOODING more likely?

A

Things that cause floods:

  1. If rainfall is particularly heavy and prolonged.
  2. If the land around the river doesn’t have enough trees to soak up the rain.
  3. If the land is already very wet (saturated) it cannot soak up anymore rain.
  4. If the river is full of sand, mud or rubbish, it may cause blockage.

Flooding Happens To Saturated Blockages.

21
Q

What is CLIMATE CHANGE?

A
  • Climate change is a natural occurring phenomenon and has been happening to the Earth over the last 500,000 years.
  • The change is caused by Milankovitch Cycles
22
Q

How do humans enhance the GREENHOUSE EFFECT?

A

The human race enhances the Greenhouse effect by producing more Greenhouse gases like:

  • CO2
  • Methane
  • Water Vapour
  • Nitrous Oxide

These gases are produced by factories, cars, cows and cutting down trees.

23
Q

Why are some scientists concerned with CLIMATE CHANGE?
