Weapons of Mass destruction Flashcards
A device designed to be used in fighting an enemy of war to cause bodily harm to oneself from attackers
Weapon
A nuclear, radiological, chemical, biological, or other device that is intended to harm a large number of people.
Weapon of Mass Destruction
Four kinds of Weapon of Mass Destruction
Biological weapon
Chemical weapon
Nuclear weapon
Radiological weapon
A weapon that uses harmful biological agent to cause death or disease on a large scale
Biological Weapon
A weapon containing any of several chemical compounds like chlorine gas of which some are toxic agents that are intended to kill, injure or incapacitate
Chemical Weapon
A weapon combining radiological materials with a conventional explosive device
Nuclear Weapon
Destruction devices that spread dangerous radioactive materials that is wrapped around a conventional explosive to spread toxic radiation
Radiological Weapon
Delivery method of biological weapon
Aerosols
Animals
Food and water contamination
Person-to-person
A delivery method where agents are dispersed into the air, forming a fine mist that may drift for miles
Aerosols
Delivery method where diseases are spread through insects and the likes such as fleas, mice, flies, mosquitoes, and livestock.
Animal
A delivery method where pathogenic organisms and toxins are put in food and water supplies
Food and water contamination
Biological agents
Smallpox
Anthrax
Ebola Virus
Plague or black death
Tularemia or rabbit fever
Botulinum toxin
Rice Blast
Rinder Pest
Nipah disease
Common chemical weapons
Sarin
Soman
VX
Tabun
Zyklon B
Mustard
A colorless nerve gas and considered a potent pesticide. It has no odor in pure form which was developed in Germany in 1938.
Sarin
A combination of Sarin and Lewisite, an effective blistering agent. A colorless liquid becomes dark brown if aged. Considered a volatile substance.
Soman
Brownish in liquid form and its vapors are odorless. Used as a nerve gas which causes convulsions, loss of consciousness, paralysis, and failure of the respiratory system leading to death.
VX
was discovered by accident in Germany in 1937. it is colorless or brownish liquid and odorless as a vapor. A large dose exposure can lead to loss of consciousness,
convulsions, paralysis and respiratory failure which can lead
to death.
Tabun
Another poison gas invented in Germany in 1920. It is a colorless vapor at normal temperature and smell like bitter almonds
Zyklon B
First used near the end of the World War. The chemical compound is often called “blister agents” because their injuries usually resemble burns or blisters. They have the ability to form large blisters on exposed skin and in the lungs.
Mustard
Two main types of nuclear weapons
Fusion and fission weapons
In this nuclear reaction, atoms are
split and the core of a fission bomb is made of either plutonium or highly enriched uranium.
Fission weapon
Often known as hydrogen bombs,
are fused together to create heavier atoms. This reaction can only happen at extremely high temperature and pressure
Fusion weapon
Effects of nuclear weapon
Blast
Thermal Radiation
Direct Nuclear Radiation
