A
  1. “Heavily comfortable”
    “Not cozy or homelike”

Big, luxurious home, lacks emotional connection between the family to make it cozy. Materialism inhibits love and intimacy.

Beforehand, the engagement was not complete until a beautiful ring was gifted to Sheila. Time adverbial ‘now’ suggests all previous actions were pre-eliminary and out classed by the ring.Materialistic relationship lacking love.

  1. “ A good worker, too”
    “Cheap Labour”

Eva viewed materialistically as a tool, only seen as cheap labour and regarded as a worker, dehumanised.

    +
  2. “Insisted on giving her enough money to keep her going.

Wealth presented as a method to fix all problems easily, and this gift of Gerald to Eva solves any emotional pain he causes her by simply “breaking it off” nonchalantly. Insisted suggests he saw this as the best act of kindness possible, seeing matters in a materialistic way as usual.

Q

Wealth End

A
  1. “ Look, Inspector — I’d give thousands — yes, thousands —“

Instant change from unhappy, uncomfortable and violent tone to a more pleasant, charming tone. Typical bribery of upper class. Hesitance suggests intense discomfort yet necessity. Also, money again used as the only option which fixes everything, suggesting Birling only focuses on money and status ever.

  1. “You made her pay a heavy price for that. And she’ll make you pay a heavier price still”

Motif of price is the only way a “hard headed man of business”would understand the weight of his actions. The use of the comparative heavier suggests there is still more to pay back for their actions. Birling only cares if the prie to pay is materialistic and not emotional.
