Q

Political Ideology Start

A
  1. “a man has to mind his own business and look after himself and his own”

Capitalistic viewpoint through the personal possessive pronouns his and own.

  1. “Community and all that nonsense “

Dismissing community as nonsense. Collective “all” suggests criticism or all socialistic and new ideologies of the time.

  1. “A chain of events”

Imagery of chain, plus metaphor of life as a chain suggesting society is connected through more than just money or startups, and that all actions affect others in some way or form. Socialism is more than an economic system, but a moral code for everyday life.

Q

Political Ideology Middle

A
  1. (massively) “Public men, Mr Birling, have responsibilities as well as privileges.”

Inspector says this with a calm yet scornful tone, silently judging Mr. Birling. The simile suggests that men must regard responsibility and privilege equally, and not just prioritise greed and privilege to chives entitlement and personal gain. Socialism vs. Capitalism.

  1. “You slammed the door in her face”

Violent verb suggest Capitalists construct barriers between themselves and lower classed people not worth their money, in order to stop them from succeeding the way they do — Selfish nature.

  1. “She needed not only money but advice, sympathy, friendliness”

Tricolon suggesting overwhelming neglect for the emotional aspects of hardship, due to a money geared capitalist society. Socialism is more than an economic system, but also a means of people closely working with and helping each other.

Q

Political Ideology End

A
  1. “You made her pay a heavy price for that. And now she’ll make you pay a heavier price still”

Motif of price is the only way a “hard headed man of business”would understand the weight of his actions. The use of the comparative heavier suggests there is still more to pay back for their actions. Birling only cares if the prie to pay is materialistic and not emotional.

  1. “ We don’t live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other.”

Use of collective pronoun for collective responsibility. The Inspector is educating with direct address. Priestly’s mouthpiece to communicate with audience.

  1. “ if men will not learn that lesson”

Inspector criticises patriarchal society, as ironic due to only person changing and learning is a woman i.e Sheila. Either to all of mankind, suggesting collective responsibility and collective downfall, but also to capitalist men running a capitalist patriarchal society.
