Weaknesses of DCT Flashcards

1
Q

Euthyphro dilemna.

A

Is conduct right because God commands it, or does God command it because it is right? If you accept the first option, then God loses moral goodness because there seem to be immoral commands in the Bible, such as those that support slavery, etc. But if we accept the latter option, then God loses omnipotence because there would have to be a moral law external to God himself, which he obeys.

Q

Immoral behaviour in the bible

A

Leviticus 20:13 states that if a man lies with another man, ‘they shall be put to death’ because it is an ‘abomination’.
.In the letter of Paul to Titus, slaves are told to be’submissive to their masters’ and show ‘true fidelity’, which seems to condone slavery.

Q

Conflict with human laws

A

Followers of DCT may experience conflict between their faith and the law. For example, the Bible condemns homosexuality, but in many countries today, there are specific laws in place to protect LGBTQ individuals.
