What are the key points of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974?
DUTY of employer to ensure health and safety and welfare at work for all employees
- Provide safe working environment
- Provide safe work equipment
- Provide safe working systems
- Ensure competent staff
- Assess risks
- Provide facilities e.g. toilets
- Appoint competent person to oversee (CEO)
- Report injuries
- Detailed health and safety info held on site
When is a health and safety document required and what does it set out?
When you employee more than 5 employees.
It sets out:
- Policy setting out organisations commitment to health and safety
- Details of the organisations H&S structure
- Risk assessment
- Details of implementing the policy and control measures
What does the control of asbestos regulations set out?
Sets out who the duty holder is and their responsibilities such as:
- steps to find out any materials containing asbestos
- if in doubt assume they contain
- keep record of the location of asbestos
- assess risk of asbestos
- prepare management plan
- review
What is RIDDOR
Report Injuries Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations
What must you do under RIDDOR
Trigger date for reporting injuries is over 7 days from incapacitation
Such injury must be reported to HSE within 15 days.
Employers must keep record of 3 day plus injuries.
What is the occupiers liability act?
General principle that occupiers have a duty of care over anyone who visits and uses the site
What are the steps a duty holder should take when dealing with asbestos?
- Assess whether premises contains asbestos / where it is
- Assess risk
- Produce asbestos register
- Make asbestos register available to all parties who may disturb
